Spelling Variants
Introduction
Spelling varaints (spVars) are same terms with different spelling. They have same meaning, categories (POS), pronuncitaion, syntax, but different spelling. The different spelling are from different sources, such as American and British English. They can be further catgorized into following types:
Syntax on Lexical Records
The meaning of a term in a lexical record does not necessary the same. To avoid over-grown lexical records, words that sound the same, have the same POS, and also take same syntactic varaints are grouped into the same Lexical records. For example: bank (finanical institution) and bank (the margin of a watercourse - bank of a river or stream) are represented by a single lexical record:
{base=bank entry=E0011894 cat=noun variants=reg }
In addition, the syntax of a term in a lexical record does not necessary the same. This is one major exception onacronyms and abbreviations. They are grouped into one Lexical record according to POS and form, but not share thesame syntactical variants.
